Deceased estates – a guide for relatives

Has a loved one who held an account with Nordiska passed away? We understand that this is a difficult time. This guide explains, step by step, what you need to do to close the account and have the funds paid out. It is intended for parties to the estate (heirs), anyone who holds a power of attorney for the estate, or the estate’s contact person.

Step 1 – Notify us of the death

Start by contacting us to let us know that an account holder has passed away. Call our customer service team on +46 (8) 23 28 00 or email info@nordiska.com.

We will then send you an account and asset statement. This document shows the accounts and assets that the deceased person held with us at the time of death. You will need this when preparing the estate inventory (see Step 2).

Step 2 – Prepare an estate inventory

An estate inventory is a summary of everything the deceased person owned (assets) and owed (liabilities) on the date of death. It must be prepared within three months of the death and then registered with the Swedish Tax Agency.

The estate inventory serves as proof of who the parties to the estate (heirs) are and what assets the estate contains. We need it to close the account and pay the funds to the correct person.

Once the estate inventory has been completed and registered with the Swedish Tax Agency, you can proceed with closing the account with us.

Step 3 – Collect the documents we need

Before we can close the account and pay out the funds, we need to receive the following documents in original form:

  • Registered estate inventory – a copy of the estate inventory bearing the Swedish Tax Agency’s stamp
  • Copies of identification documents – copies of valid identification, such as a passport or national identity card, for all parties to the estate. The copies must be certified (see the explanation below)
  • Account closure and payout form – completed and signed (see Step 4 to download the form)
  • Proof of bank account – only required if the funds are to be paid into an account other than the one already linked to the deceased person’s account (the pre-registered withdrawal account)

If there is more than one party to the estate and one person will represent the estate, we also need:

  • Power of attorney – a signed form through which all parties to the estate authorise one person to manage contact with Nordiska (see Step 4 to download the form)

What does certification mean?

Certifying a copy of an identification document means that two other people confirm that the copy matches the original. Follow these steps:

  1. Make a copy of the identification document, such as a passport or national identity card.
  2. Ask two people who are not parties to the estate to write the following information directly on the copy: their signature, printed name, date and telephone number.
